Kamloops is moving closer to completing the construction of its first food hall, a project that began in the summer of 2019.

The Yew Street Food Hall, which is expected to be opening late summer or early fall, will host ten different food businesses that will prepare, package, sell and serve their product. Food halls focus on bringing together mini-restaurants, bars, food markets and shared kitchens while offering a large space for people to gather.

Joshua Knaak is a financial professional with Arpa Investments, a partner company in the project managing the building and property components.

"The food hall will bring ten new opportunities for restaurants, and food and beverage vendors to try some start up concepts," Knaak said. "It is an opportunity for people who want to take a next step in their business. A food truck can now be open all year round and a bakery who has been selling at farmers markets can take its next step. This hall is providing new opportunities, new jobs and  new places to eat at. With development comes attention and with attention comes improvement. We are grateful to the city for improvements they have financed on the North Shore."

The original concept of installing a commissary kitchen is on hold until scheduling requirements for vendors are worked out.

Knaak says as soon as the final construction permits are received, the construction process will be wrapped up quickly. He says the project has been rolling out smoothly, despite the spike in commodity prices. Currently eight of the 10 vending spots are full.

The hall is located on the bottom floor of the The Colours on Spirit Square residential development complex on the city's North Shore, a location Knaak says is optimal.

"This is a great corner already, with Red Beard Cafe and Jamaican Kitchen close by," he said. "Being on the bottom floor of a 38-unit mixed-use living complex will allow for a great gathering place. The residential units were built with the intention of having the hall on the main floor so decisions were made around that during construction."
