Kamloops emergency crews searching for man missing in Thompson River

Kamloops Tk'emlups RCMP are looking for a man in the river after he attempted to swim from the North Shore, never reaching the other side last night.

Around 7:30 p.m. yesterday, Jan. 28, police received reports of an unknown man walking into the Thompson River, according to an RCMP media release. He entered from the north bank and tried to swim across and witnesses told police he had "bobbed up and down several times" before disappearing under the surface.

Emergency services have attended the area to search. Police dogs, infrared tracking, the Kamloops Fire Rescue boat and the Kamloops Search and Rescue drone have all failed to locate the man so far.

Two hours before the man went into the water, witnesses told police they saw a Caucasian man in his 30s who "appeared lost." He was wearing a blue jacket with the hood up and a ball cap underneath.

Emergency crews are still searching the river while police conduct further interviews with witnesses.

Witnesses, or anyone who may know the man, are asked to contact the Kamloops rural detachment at 250-314-8000.
