Intoxicated 16-year-old regrets trying to steal pizza delivery guy's car in Kelowna

January 22, 2018 - 3:56 PM

KELOWNA – A pizza delivery driver recovered his own stolen vehicle yesterday.

It was almost 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 21, when a driver making a delivery on Keithley Road heard his BMW 540i leave without him.

He chased the car on foot towards McCurdy Road where, according to RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, he managed to climb into the rear seat.

“Now inside his vehicle, the owner managed to physically overtake the alleged auto theft suspect, forced his vehicle into park and pushed the male out of the car,” O’Donaghey says in a media release.

Police arrived to find an intoxicated 16-year-old being “physically detained.”

The 16-year-old suspect from Kelowna was held in police custody overnight and faces potential criminal and B.C. Motor Vehicle Act charges. He was later released, on strict conditions, into the care and custody of a guardian and is expected to appear in Court April 24.

“RCMP do not recommend the public put themselves or others at risk to recover their property when stolen,” O’Donaghey says. “Luckily no one was seriously harmed and no significant damage was caused as a result.”
