iN VIDEO: SUV smashes into cop car, West Kelowna Subway
Two people, including a West Kelowna police officer, were sent to the hospital early this morning after a vehicle hit a police SUV and a West Kelowna Subway.
The crash occurred this morning, May 7 at Main Street and Hoskins Road.
Just before 1 a.m., a police officer in West Kelowna was driving a police SUV on Main Street when it was struck by a Dodge Durango that ran a stop sign. After striking the police vehicle, the Durango crashed into a Subway restaurant in the 2400-block area of Main Street, according to the RCMP in a news release.
West Kelowna Fire Department, Emergency Health Services and a traffic analyst from B.C. Highway Patrol were on scene.
“The police officer sustained minor, non-life threatening injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment,” said Cpl. Tammy Lobb, media relations officer for the Kelowna RCMP.
“At the time of the collision, the officer was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe. The Tahoe sustained significant front end damage when was t-boned by the Dodge Durango. The officer has since been released from hospital and we are grateful they were not seriously injured as this collision could have been much more serious.”
There was significant damage to the restaurant as the vehicle crashed through the front of the business before coming to a stop inside.
A 30-year-old man who was driving the vehicle was arrested for impaired operation and was released once sober to appear in court at a later date. The driver could be facing charges related to his arrest, according to the RCMP.
His 20-year-old passenger, another man, was transported to hospital with minor injuries, according to the RCMP.
The investigation is on-going.
