A weekend crash in Kamloops reduced highway traffic to a single lane for several hours after a police vehicle toppled a civilian's.
Seen on dash cam footage, it appears the police pickup was making a U-turn as it collided with a northbound truck on Highway 5 near Rayleigh.
Police lights can be seen flashing just as the unmarked pickup's rear panel is struck by the nose of the blue Ford Ranger. The police truck spins around and the civilian's flips onto its side in the Saturday, May 10 collision at around 8:30 a.m.
"We have already spoken to multiple witnesses, collected multiple dash camera videos, including from inside the police car itself, but we are still looking for more witnesses because we're going to be very thorough with this and a police vehicle was involved," BC Highway Patrol spokesperson Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said.
The highway patrol is investigating the incident and once it makes a determination, using scene reconstruction, witness accounts and videos, they'll be taking the extra step of referring it to another police department, he said.
It's a process that could take months, but McLaughlin said the department intends to be transparent about the investigation because its own officer was involved.
"We're very alive to the fact we're going to have to update this one, but it's going to take month probably," McLaughlin said. "But it will be coming sooner or later."
There were two women in the Ford Ranger, but they weren't seriously injured, nor was the officer involved, he said.
