Drive B.C. warns of slippery sections throughout the Thompson-Okanagan region today, Nov. 28, both on mountain highways and in valley bottoms.
Most mountain highways are not expected to get much more than snow flurries early today, with clearing in many locations this afternoon.
One exception is the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt which is expected to get 2 cm of snow starting late in the morning. Highway 1 from Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass is also expected to get 2 cm of snow today with temperatures dropping to -24 Celsius tonight.
Travel advisories were issued for several southern Interior highway this afternoon by the Ministry of Transportation due to an "unpredictable weather front moving in."
Highway 5 from five km north of Hope to 11 km south of Great Bear Snowshed, Highway 3 from Hope to 32 km west of Princeton, Highway 1 from Hope to two km south of Jackass Mountain Summit and Highway 7 from Mission to one kilometre east of Hope are impacted.
In the valley bottoms it’s expected to stay below freezing today with highs of -5 Celsius in Kamloops with a 30% chance of snow flurries early this morning and winds gusting up to 50 km/h giving a wind chill factor of -14 C.
The Okanagan is expected to be slightly warmer with highs of -3 C. Kelowna and Vernon have a 60% chance of slow flurries and wind gusts up to 40 km/h. Penticton has only a 40% chance of flurries but winds up to 50 km/h.
On the ski hills, Sun Peaks had 9 cm of new snow in the last 24 hours for an alpine base of 70 cm. It will be cold today as temperatures range from -14 C at the base to -20 C at the summit. It is expected to be mainly sunny this afternoon.
Big White had 14 cm of new snow over the last 24 hours for an alpine base of 92 cm. It’s recording a temperature of -12 C with an overcast sky offering limited visibility this morning.
There have been 20 cm of snow in the last 24 hours at Silver Star creating an alpine base of 106 cm. Temperatures are expected to range from -10 C to -15 C.
Apex Mountain doesn’t open until Friday but shows 19 cm of new snow in the last 24 hours for an alpine base of 95 cm.
