MORE CENSUS DATA OUT TODAY

Statistics Canada will offer a detailed look today at the size of the gap between the country's top income earners and those toiling at the bottom — a chasm that appears to be narrowing but remains far too wide for many to easily cross. The income data, collected as part of last year's census, is expected to show a 10 per cent increase in median incomes for families and single people over the last decade, but a wide gulf between rich and poor.

ONTARIO PREMIER TO TESTIFY AT BRIBERY TRIAL

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne is to testify today at a bribery trial being held in Sudbury, Ont., involving a former top adviser and a Liberal fundraiser. Both Pat Sorbara and Gerry Lougheed have pleaded not guilty to offering would-be candidate Andrew Olivier a job or appointment to get him to step aside for Wynne's preferred candidate in a 2015 byelection. Wynne is not charged in the case.

LIBERAL STALWART ALLAN MacEACHEN DIES

Allan MacEachen, a long-serving Nova Scotia Liberal MP and senator, has died at the age of the 96. The news was announced on Twitter late Tuesday by former Ontario premier and federal MP Bob Rae. MacEachen was one of Canada's most powerful cabinet ministers in the postwar era and oversaw numerous portfolios, including Finance, Labour, Health and what was then called External Affairs. Born in Inverness, N.S., in 1921, MacEachen was first elected to the House of Commons in 1953.

FIRE CREWS FEND OFF FLAMES IN SOUTHWEST ALBERTA

Firefighters have halted the spread of a wildfire into Alberta's Waterton Lakes National Park townsite, but were unable to save the visitor's centre or stop flames from spreading into grasslands outside the park. Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said 500 people were ordered out of their homes in the Waterton townsite and in parts of nearby Cardston County, the Municipality of Pincher Creek and a First Nations community southwest of Lethbridge. Remaining residents were warned they may have to leave on short notice.

HOOTSUITE CEO CONCERNED ABOUT TAX PLAN

The head of a Canadian tech firm says Ottawa's proposed changes to small business taxes could hamper innovation and prevent Canada from becoming a hotbed for technology giants. Ryan Holmes, CEO of social media platform Hootsuite, is calling on the federal government to "to look very closely" at the plan because it is causing a lot of concern for entrepreneurs like himself.

MAN WHO CREATED REVENGE WEBSITE SAYS HE WAS PROVOKED

A sentencing hearing continues in Vancouver today for a British Columbia man convicted of criminally harassing his ex-wife. Patrick Fox told the hearing in B.C. Supreme Court Tuesday that he made a revenge website to destroy Desiree Capuano because he blames her for getting deported without their teenage son. Fox, a Canadian citizen, said he blames Capuano for his deportation from the U.S. in 2013 following his conviction for perjury.

MILD, DRY FALL AHEAD FOR MOST OF CANADA, SAYS WEATHER NETWORK

A Weather Network forecaster is calling for comparatively mild temperatures and dry conditions for much of Canada this coming fall. Chief Meteorologist Chris Scott says temperatures are expected to be near or above seasonal norms from coast to coast, with only momentary flashes of prospective winter conditions. Scott says the outlook is similar for precipitation, with most regions on course to receive rainfall in line with seasonal averages.

CALGARY FLAMES PULL OUT OF ARENA TALKS

The Calgary Flames say they are pulling out of talks with the city for a new arena. Team president Ken King says the team owners believe they can't make a deal because negotiations have been unproductive. Flanked by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, King also said the Flames are committed to staying in Calgary for now.
