IN PICTURES: The fires and floods of 2013

Vernon Fire and Rescue was kept busy in 2013 responding to fires, floods, and lots of car accidents.

VERNON - Those who were evacuated from burning buildings or rescued from crashed vehicles know firsthand what Vernon Fire and Rescue Services did for our community in 2013.

The rest of us may not be aware of what they’ve been up to, aside from seeing the odd fire engine whip by. With a total of 5,433 calls for service, the department kept busy. While not dousing flames, firefighters put in hours upon hours of training and also volunteered their time in a number of local causes.

Here’s a breakdown, in pictures, of how Vernon Fire and Rescue spent the year.

Photographs of Ellison Provincial Park, training exercises, the overturned semi and others were contributed by Vernon Fire Rescue Services. The Lumby flooding photo is courtesy of Suzanne Smith.
