Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk suspended one game for unsportsmanlike conduct

NEW YORK - Calgary Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk has been suspended one game for unsportsmanlike conduct stemming from an incident in Wednesday's meeting with the Detroit Red Wings.

The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced the suspension on Friday.

The incident occurred at 14:04 of the third period and began when Wings forward Luke Witkowski went after Calgary's Brett Kulak late in an 8-2 victory. The fight escalated into a brawl when Witkowski, who had been escorted off the ice by the linesmen, attempted to return to the fray and was jabbed by the stick of Tkachuk.

Tkachuk is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement and, based on his average annual salary, will forfeit US$11,280.49.

The NHL also suspended Witkowski for 10 games, costing him more than $40,000 in lost salary, for his actions.
