Don Cherry calls Subban's overtime-goal celebration "absolutely ridiculous"

LLOYDMINSTER, Alta. - Don Cherry says he was not impressed with P.K. Subban's goal celebration against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night.

Cherry used his "Coach's Corner" segment of Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday to criticize what he believed to be excessive celebration following the Montreal defenceman's overtime winner.

"I'm the guy who pumped (Subban) for Team Canada ... but this is one of the reasons they did not want him, because of what he did in Ottawa," Cherry said. "All he does is pump up the other team. He has to stop that stuff ... It's absolutely ridiculous."

The hockey commentator also said that Subban should "stop that stuff" when he's playing for Canada at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, next month.

Asked by co-host Ron MacLean what he thinks of those who say goal celebrations are needed in hockey to give the sport more personality, Cherry shut that notion down.

"Those are dumb-head reporters," Cherry said. "They're dumb guys on TV. They never, ever, ever, ever played the game. They never coached. ... I think as a coach and a player, not like those dummies. Don't do it. You lower yourself doing it."
