Girl, seven, who died in B.C. rock slide north of Vancouver named by coroner

Original Publication Date December 23, 2014 - 5:40 PM

VANCOUVER - The B.C. Coroners Service says a seven-year-old girl was hiking with family and friends on a mountain north of Vancouver and was stopped for a break when the rock slide hit that claimed her life.

Erin Moore of Lions Bay, B.C., has been identified by the coroner as the victim of Monday's accident on Unnecessary Mountain.

Coroner Barb McLintock says the group stopped for a break beside a creek when the slide occurred and trapped Moore.

She says the girl could not be resuscitated, despite the best efforts of her family, community members and the Lions Bay and North Shore search-and-rescue teams.

Martin Colwell of Lions Bay Search and Rescue said shortly after the incident that heavy rain may be responsible for the slide and members of the hiking group tried to dig her out.

McLintock says death remains under investigation.
