Highway 97 near Summerland will once again be closed for a short period of time this week.

On Thursday, Nov. 30, between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Highway 97 from Callan Road to Okanagan Lake Provincial Park, will be closed for blasting at the site of a rockslide, according to a Ministry of Transportation media release.

The operation must take place during daylight hours, but the highway will reopen as soon as it is deemed safe by the work and safety assessments.

Throughout the winter, Highway 97 will continue to have two lanes opened to traffic and a contractor will maintain the lanes to make sure safety standards are being met.

For drivers who choose to avoid Highway 97, a detour around the slide area is available on 201 Forest Service Road, which will be maintained until further notice. Travellers using this route should be prepared with proper winter tires, food, water and fuel.
