WEST KELOWNA - A high risk takedown in a quiet West Kelowna neighbourhood yesterday was considered necessary because police were after a suspect in a recent shooting.

The Emergency Response Team and a helicopter appeared on Ranch Road in the Glenrosa neighbourhood early Friday afternoon, Aug. 16 with many witnesses reporting a man being arrested. Police told no one what was happening or why they were there until late last night.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey said in a release they were targeting a 31-year-old man who allegedly shot another man in Peachland Aug. 11. The unidentified victim in that altercation was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The suspect has been described to police as little more than seen wearing a black T-shirt and a covered face.

“As a direct result of the actions of our front line officers at the scene, and the continued investigation led by the West Kelowna RCMP GIS team, a prime suspect was identified by police,” O’Donaghey said. “That suspect was taken into police custody, Friday afternoon in West Kelowna, with the assistance of the RCMP Southeast District Emergency Response Team.”

The man is facing potential charges but was not identified by police.

— This story was corrected at 10:32 a.m. An original release by police incorrectly stated the suspect's age as 34 years old.
