HILO, Hawaii - One of Hawaii's newest volcanic fissures is in need of a name and the state is asking for suggestions.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported Thursday that the state Board of Geographic Names has formed a committee to give a moniker to one of the two dozen land vents that formed during the 2018 lower East Rift Zone eruption in 2018.
The newspaper reports that the Permitted Action Group is expected to meet twice this year with the community in Puna on the Big Island to recommend names for fissure 8, which produced the most voluminous lava flow of the eruption.
The newspaper reports that as of March 11, the board has received 15 proposed names including the Hawaiian words for regeneration, creation, new beginnings, raging fire, and hill of destruction.
