Help hunger disappear

Kelowna - The Campbell Company of Canada and the Overwaitea Food Group has joined forces to help hunger disappear.

This weekend, shoppers at the Coopers Rutland store will be greeted by an impressive apple core made out of Campbell’s soup cans.  The display is part of the Help Hunger Disappear campaign at participating Overwaitea stores in Kelowna and West Kelowna.

“It’s our seventh year, “says Ron Jean of the Campbell Company of Canada. “Our goal is to raise awareness about hunger and inspire people to fight it.”

Jean says that a number of in-store events are planned this weekend including:
Friday Bar-B-Q - Coopers Rutland, 11-3pm
Saturday Bar-B-Q – Save-On-Foods Orchard Plaza, 11-3pm
Saturday Save-On-Foods Lakeshore Plaza, regular store hours
Saturday ‘Family Day’ - Save-On Foods West Kelowna, 11-4pm

“We are encouraging everyone to either bring non-perishable donations or purchase items in-store,” says Jean.  “In addition, shoppers can support the campaign by purchasing $1 campaign icons at the cash register and be automatically entered to win a $250 in-store gift certificate.”
According to Lenetta Parry, Food Bank Executive Director “the need becomes increasingly critical in the spring as donations received during the holiday season deplete.”
“Despite a stronger economy, this campaign serves as a reminder that hunger is a daily struggle for many in our community. 33% of Food Bank users are children.  We simply cannot thank Campbell’s, the Overwaitea Food Group and their customers enough for helping us to feed hungry children,” says Parry.
