Heffley Creek bridge construction expected to be complete in July

KAMLOOPS - It's been just over one year since Old Highway 5 in Heffley Creek was washed out by spring floodwaters, and the City of Kamloops is another step closure to a solution.

Capital projects manager with the city, Darren Crundwell, says although the construction of a replacement bridge was expected to be completed in the spring, some delays have led to an anticipated projected end date of this summer.

"We’re hoping for July," Crundwell says. "Everything’s in our control now, all the archaeology’s dealt with, the freshet’s done."

Crundwell says the site of the washout, which occurred last May, had to be studied for artifacts after seven different archaeological sites were found. All of those have been dealt with now, Crundwell says, adding the artifacts are being kept safe before being returned to their original sites.

Numbers aren't available at the moment for where the project is in terms of budget, but Crundwell says a report will be made to council soon to discuss how much was spent. He says more has been spent on archaeology than was originally anticipated.

Crundwell says the bridge, which will replace a washed out culvert on Old Highway 5 in front of the Heffley Creek Store, is in its final stages and will be opened to the public as soon as possible.

"I think people, if they're out there too, they see quite a bit of progress being made," Crundwell says.

Last October, Kamloops city council approved a $2.1-million contract to have the bridge built.
