Hedge fire visible from many parts of Kelowna

KELOWNA - A large plume of smoke was visible from many parts of the city yesterday.

The Kelowna Fire Department were called to the scene of a hedge fire causing the smoke yesterday, May 19 at approximately 12:15 p.m.

A media release says the first arriving officer reported that nearly 20 feet of cedar hedge had been consumed by fire.

Residents had already been at work on the blaze with two garden hoses and fire extinguishers. By the time fire crews had arrived most of the fire had already been extinguished the release says.

Kelowna Fire Department completed the extinguishment, checked for extension and overhauled the area. The damage was contained to the hedge.

The cause of the fire was deemed accidental in nature.

Kelowna Fire Department responded with one engine and a bush unit.

Officials remind the public that open burning within Kelowna in prohibited.
