Heavy snow and crashes in Southern Interior
A snowy weather system on Sunday, Feb. 25, dumped 30 centimetres of snow on the Coquihalla Summit and up to 15 cm in the Rogers Pass, following on heavy snowfall earlier in the weekend.
That may have contributed to a number of traffic mishaps in those regions, including the one on Highway 1 between Golden and Revelstoke in the photo above, submitted to iNFOnews.ca at 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
No RCMP news releases were issued to explain what happened.
The southbound lane of the Coquihalla Highway south of Kamloops was closed due to a vehicle incident at about 8 p.m. Sunday night, forcing traffic to detour along Highway 5A for almost 20 km.
At about the same time, Highway 97A was closed in both directions from 14 to 16 km south of Sicamous due to downed power lines. The detour was via Highway 97B and Highway 1.
The heavy snowfall in mountain passes over the weekend is expected to ease to flurries in most areas today but 2-4 cm of snow are expected to fall on Highway 1 between Eagle Pass and Kootenay Pass today.
