Hunting out of season prompts stiff fine for B.C. guide-outfitter

.

TELKWA, B.C. - Stiff fines have been imposed on two northern B.C. guide outfitters found to have committed several infractions, including guiding without a licence.

Telkwa, B.C.-based Upper Stikine River Adventures Limited and its two principals, Wesley Berge and Gerald Geraci, face combined fines of more than $90,000.

Omenica Zone Conservation Office spokesman Tracy Walbauer says the list of violations against the men included guiding without licenses and hunting out of season.

In all, 42 infractions were investigated prompting a fine of nearly $40,000 against the company.

Berge must pay $35,000 while Geraci has been assessed a $10,000 penalty and several guides employed by Upper Stikine River Adventures are each fined $3,000, with at least $16,000 of the total fine to be paid to the Habitat Conservation Trust Fund.

An investigation was launched in 2010 after information was received from a First Nations group north of Mackenzie. (CFTK)
