A suspected human-caused grass fire that was highly visible near Ashcroft is now under control.

The B.C. Wildfire Service reported the fire started today, May 18, and grew to roughly 0.5 hectares in size before a crew of eight wildfire firefighters and local fire crews got it under control.

Fire information officer Kyla Fraser said no homes were threatened by the wildfire.

When a fire is listed as "under control" it means it has received sufficient suppression action and the service doesn't anticipate it will spread further, Fraser said.

The wildfire service is investigating the cause of the fire but it's suspected to be human caused.

"When we have fires that occur in very grassy environments such as what we see around Ashcroft, they often start and move quite quickly but we also tend to be able to get a hand on them quite quickly as well... it goes through the fuels quicker," Fraser said.

The fire is located north of Ashcroft, on the east side of the Thompson River, according to the service's wildfire map.
