Glenmore car wash proposal rubs residents the wrong way

KELOWNA – A new six bay car wash proposed for Glenmore Road has several neighbours worried.

The car wash would be set on a vacant lot located within the Glenmore Village Centre. It is bordered by a public utility lot, Sutton Glen Park and large residential development to the south.

Property officer Ryan Smith says both the city and the developer have been contacted by neighbourhood residents concerned about noise from vacuums and wash bays.

“The neighbours south of the proposal have expressed significant concerns about the proposed use,” Smith says. “Staff will continue to work with the neighbourhood and the developer to resolve those concerns.”

Although city staff is recommending the development be given the green light, almost all councillors expressed disagreement.

“I have some real concerns about this application,” Robert Hobson says. “It’s right next to a residential area and they can’t put in the kind of buffer we would normally put in because it would block the view of the park. I am very dubious about this.”

Coun. Luke Stack voiced similar concerns, calling the development an assault on the neighbourhood.

“The applicant is aware of these concerns,” Smith says. “They have been fielding as many, if not more, of the calls than city staff has and we realize the noise and the traffic to the site is a big concern.”

The matter will be sent to a public hearing April 15.
