Garbage volunteers needed

Do you ever think about where your garbage goes when you set it at the curb or toss it in the nearest dumpster? Want to have some input on the future of our garbage and how it’s managed? Well now is your chance!

The Regional District of Central Okanagan is updating its Solid Waste Management Plan to lay the groundwork for managing and reducing our garbage over the next 15 years. As part of that process it’s looking for interested, enthusiastic individuals to represent various business, community, and neighborhood organizations to sit on the Public/Technical Advisory Committee (PTAC) which will oversee development of the plan.

Working with the consulting firm Morrison Hershfield Ltd, the PTAC will meet regularly to provide input, feedback, and recommendations to the Regional District of Central Okanagan on proposed programs and policies that will shape the future of how we manage our waste. Topics for future planning will include recycling, composting, waste collection and disposal for residents, business and industry in the region, as well as setting new goals to work toward.

What’s the time commitment? The PTAC will be made up of approximately 15-20 people and meetings will be held approximately once a month from February to June 2016. Committee members will be required to do a little homework such as giving consideration to the ideas proposed, providing suggestions on how best to share information with the public, and taking back updates and getting feedback from any group or association represented.

Later this year as part of the overall SWMP process, residents will have the opportunity to review the proposed plan and provide important feedback through a series of Public Open Houses and other key tools of engagement across the region. This will be a chance for all members of the public to learn more about the proposed programs, offer their input and have their questions answered.

If joining the PTAC sounds interesting to you or your organization, please complete an Applicant Profile form by January 25th, 2016, available on line at www.regionaldistrict.com/garbagefuture.

Application forms can also be picked up at reception at the Regional District of Central Okanagan Office on KLO Road, or City of Kelowna, City of West Kelowna, District of Peachland, and District of Lake Country.

For more information contact the Regional District Waste Reduction Office at 250-469-6250.
