West Kelowna food bank stripped of charitable status after tax review

WEST KELOWNA, B.C. - A food bank in West Kelowna, B.C., has been stripped of its charitable status by the Canada Revenue Agency.

According to a letter from the CRA, Bette's Single Family and Seniors Food Bank violated numerous sections of the Income Tax Act.

The CRA says more than $45,000 in cash donations was spent on president Bette Ladd's wages, car, and cell phone in 2008.

Only $19,626, or 20 per cent of cash donations, went to food.

The CRA also says it could not determine if expense receipts were related to the food bank or Ladd, and many receipts were for non-typical items such as shampoo, dog food or single purchase items.

Ladd says she is appealing the decision. (CKFR)
