How major US stock indexes fared Tuesday

Stocks closed broadly higher on Wall Street Tuesday as strong earnings reports from several U.S. companies put investors in a buying mood.

Technology companies accounted for much of the rally, which extended the benchmark S&P 500 index's winning streak to five days.

On Tuesday:

The S&P 500 index rose 12.83 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 2,737.70.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 172.15 points, or 0.7 per cent, to 25,411.52.

The Nasdaq composite added 54.55 points, or 0.7 per cent, to 7,402.08.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies picked up 2.69 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 1,520.23.

For the week:

The S&P 500 is up 31.17 points, or 1.2 per cent.

The Dow is up 347.63 points, or 1.4 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 138.22 points, or 1.9 per cent.

The Russell 2000 is up 18.17 points, or 1.2 per cent.

For the year:

The S&P 500 is up 230.85 points, or 9.2 per cent.

The Dow is up 2,084.06 points, or 8.9 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 766.81 points, or 11.6 per cent.

The Russell 2000 is up 171.67 points, or 12.7 per cent.
