Final traffic headaches on Trans-Canada in Kicking Horse Canyon
The final traffic headaches for drivers on the Trans-Canada Highway will be felt this spring as the last stage of the massive highway and bridge project in Kicking Horse Canyon wraps up.
The Ministry of Highways says the final work on Phase 4, which has an estimated price tag of $601 million, will get underway on Tuesday, April 2, following the Easter long weekend.
The fourth and final phase of the Highway 1 - Kamloops to Alberta - Four Laning Program through the canyon just east of Golden was the most difficult, the ministry said.
The 4.8 kilometre corridor through the canyon sees 10,000 vehicles a day in the summer months and up to 30% of the traffic is commercial vehicles the ministry says moves millions of dollars in interprovincial and international trade goods.
Highway 1 will have one lane of traffic in each direction for the rest of the project, which is expected to run through the spring. Crews will be finishing the paving, line painting, wildlife fencing and landscaping.
Full closures of up to two hours are scheduled for April 3, April 15, April 29 and May 13, as well as early mornings on June 10, June 11, June 24 and June 25.
