December 06, 2018 - 7:31 AM

TORONTO - Acclaimed cinematographer Zoe Dirse and emerging filmmaker Amar Wala were honoured by the Documentary Organization of Canada on Wednesday.

Dirse took the Rogers-DOC Luminary Award while Wala received the BMO-DOC Vanguard Award at the fifth annual DOC Institute Honours in Toronto.

The DOC Institute is an initiative of DOC Ontario, the largest chapter of the Documentary Organization of Canada.

The award winners were chosen by a jury of documentary filmmakers and producers from across Canada.

Dirse has been a pioneering cinematographer on dozens of documentaries over her award-winning career, including "Forbidden Love: The Unashamed Stories of Lesbian Lives," "Kanehsatake: 270 Years of Resistance" and "Madame President," which she also co-directed and co-wrote.

Toronto-based Wala's credits include his debut feature, "The Secret Trial 5," the Viceland series "PayDay," and CBC's "In the Making."

His BMO-DOC Vanguard Award, which honours emerging creatives, comes with approximately $47,000 in support, cash awards, and in-kind services from a host of sponsors and supporters.
