Excessive speed, alcohol play role in Kelowna car crash

KELOWNA - RCMP are trying to figure out which of the three people in a car crash at City Park in Kelowna Sunday night was behind the wheel.

A driver lost control of their vehicle, which was going an estimated 150 km/h, and crashed in City Park at the end of Harvey Avenue in downtown Kelowna at around 7 p.m. Sunday, June 17, according to an RCMP media release. Along with excessive speed, police say alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Evidence at the scene suggests the driver lost control of the vehicle and was unable to complete the left-hand curve on the roadway near Abbott Street, RCMP say.

The vehicle skidded for over 60 metres, burst through shrubbery, damaged a light standard, destroyed over 30 metres of chain link fence, rolled down an embankment, sheared off an electrical box and came to rest wedged against a tree. Debris and vehicle parts were strewn all over the scene.

“Police have identified the three occupants inside the vehicle who were assisted out of the wreckage by witnesses on scene,” Const. Lesley Smith says in the release. “None of the occupants aged 25, 32 and 32 were wearing seatbelts and miraculously did not suffer any life-threatening injuries.

"It was also extremely lucky that no one else was involved in the collision as that location is highly populated with motor vehicle traffic and pedestrians.”

Police are still trying to determine which of the three people in the vehicle was driving and the investigation remains ongoing.

No charges have been laid.
