Turkey: Top PKK militant wounded in northern Iraq airstrike

ANKARA, Turkey - Turkey's state-run news agency says a senior Kurdish rebel commander has been seriously wounded in a Turkish airstrike in northern Iraq. Three other wanted militants were killed.

Anadolu Agency said Wednesday that Riza Altun was wounded in a March 21 joint operation between Turkey's military and intelligence agency that targeted a meeting the senior official was attending in the Qandil mountains, near Iraq's border with Iran.

Anadolu described Altun, 63, as a close aide of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, commander Cemil Bayik. The militants who died were identified as Mikail Ozdemir, Emrullah Dursun and Ali Aktas.

Turkish jets regularly bomb PKK camps in northern Iraq.

The PKK has been waging an insurgency for more than three decades, and is considered a terror group by Turkey and its allies.
