False alarm over possible explosives closes Dutch road

THE HAGUE, Netherlands - Dutch police closed a major highway for more than an hour Wednesday while explosives experts examined a suspect package that was found nearby. The A2 highway was reopened after the package was checked and no explosives were found.

Kilometres (miles) of traffic jams quickly developed after the road was closed in both directions during the late morning following the discovery of the package near a viaduct outside the central town of Nieuwegein.

The A2, which links the capital, Amsterdam, with the southern province of Limburg, is one of the Netherlands' busiest roads.
