Sicily authorities doubt terrorism behind bus incident

Original Publication Date June 20, 2017 - 9:44 AM

ROME - Authorities in Sicily say they don't believe terrorism was at play when a young Sudanese passenger grabbed the steering wheel of the bus he was riding in and tried to pull the vehicle off the road.

Palermo chief prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi says personal motives appear to be behind the incident on the bus, which was heading from Trapani to Palermo on Tuesday. Off-duty military officers on board the bus prevented the man from doing any harm, the ANSA news agency said.

Europe has been on edge following a series of incidents in which Islamic extremists have plowed vehicles into crowds of people.

Waves of African migrants have arrived in Sicily in recent years. Many make their way to migrant communities in northern Europe, but others stay there and find work.
