German: Syrian guilty of war crimes over torture videos

BERLIN - A court in Germany has found a 29-year-old Syrian man guilty of war crimes for torturing members of pro-government forces in Syria.

German news agency dpa reported Thursday that the Stuttgart regional court sentenced Mohamad K. to four years and six months in prison.

K., whose last name was not released in line with privacy laws, served in the rebel Free Syrian Army from January 2012 to January 2013.

Prosecutors alleged the defendant whipped two members of a pro-government militia with a rope or cable. Videos of the torture were uploaded to YouTube in early 2013.

The court took into consideration that the defendant had suffered as a result of Syria's civil war, had no previous convictions in Germany and had integrated well since coming to the country in 2015.
