Wife of ex-Czech PM has suspended sentence increased

PRAGUE, Czech Republic - The wife of a former Czech prime minister has had her suspended sentence on charges of abuse of power increased by a Prague appeals court from two years to three.

Jana Nagyova, who was Necas' mistress and chief of staff at the time, was convicted in 2017 of ordering the military intelligence agency to spy on Necas' estranged wife in 2012. Both, she and the state prosecutor appealed.

The scandal brought down Necas' government. After his government fell in June 2013, Necas admitted his affair with Nagyova and divorced his first wife.

Prague's Municipal Court also increased the suspended sentences to up to 30 months for two former heads of the military intelligence agency, Ondrej Palenik and Milan Kovanda, and an intelligence agent.

Friday's verdict is final.
