UK coroner rules Guildford bombings inquest should resume

January 31, 2019 - 5:43 AM

LONDON - A British coroner has ruled that the inquest into the 1974 pub bombings at the heart of the film "In The Name Of The Father" will be resumed — some 40 years after proceedings were suspended.

The original inquest into the Guildford bombings, carried out by the Irish Republican Army, was suspended after four people were convicted in 1975. The convictions were later overturned in one of the most prominent cases of miscarriage of justice in British legal history.

Surrey Coroner Richard Travers says the core issues of how, when and where the five victims died has not been established. The resumed inquest will not explore who was responsible for the bomb.

The families of the dead had campaigned to re-open the case, which took place at the height of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland known as the Troubles.
