Dozens of drivers ticketed during RCMP crackdown in South Okanagan

RCMP seized over $9,000 in cash and a police vehicle was rammed during an enforcement blitz in the South Okanagan last week.

And that wasn’t the only excitement during the four day operation between Jan. 31 and Feb. 3, when B.C. Highway Patrol’s Traffic Safety Unit and Police Dog Service teamed up with the Integrated Impaired Driving Unit, busting dozens of drivers in the areas of Osoyoos, Oliver, Keremeos and Penticton

The money was seized by officers from the Traffic Safety Unit and Police Dog Service, who also impounded three vehicles for speeding or stunt driving, impounded one vehicle for having an unlicensed driver, dealt with two people failing to stop – one of which was the person who rammed the police cruiser, arrested two people for having a combined 10 outstanding warrants, made eight drivers blow into the breathalyzer, three tickets were issued for distracted driving and two for no insurance.

“The goal of these operations is to blitz the smaller communities which may not have a dedicated traffic unit at their detachment,” said Sgt. Gregg Calibaba from the Traffic Safety Unit.

“The officers engaged in this operation are seasoned traffic members and experts in traffic enforcement and impaired driving investigations. The results they obtained speak to how B.C. Highway Patrol is making our highways safer together.”

During the RCMP's joint-effort, the Integrated Impaired Driving Unit was also punishing drivers who were not following the rules. Those officers suspended 10 people from driving because they were impaired – one of which was for 90 days, they busted two prohibited drivers, arrested four people on outstanding warrants, found one disqualified driver, seized two firearms that were in unlawful possession, and two people were evaluated for appearing to be high on drugs.

“Members of the Integrated Impaired Driving Unit are expert impaired driving investigators," says Sgt. Brian Sampson from the impaired driving unit.

“Our goal is to identify and remove impaired drivers from our roads to reduce fatal collisions and keep our highways safer for everyone.”
