Distraught Penticton man arrested after standoff with RCMP

A 44-year-old Penticton man faces possible charges after barricading himself into his apartment and throwing large items off his balcony this past weekend.

Penticton RCMP responded to a call about a distraught man at around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 18, according to an RCMP media release.

Officers attended and attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the man became increasingly violent, necessitating a call to the Southeast District Critical Incident Program Emergency Response Team, RCMP said.

The building was then evacuated as a safety precaution.

"After our officers exhausted all de-escalation attempts, and with the risk to the man and the public remaining high, the ERT deployed a less-lethal intervention option," Penticton RCMP spokesperson Const. James Grandy said in the release.

Grandy did not say what that less-lethal intervention was.

The man jumped off his balcony before police could effect an arrest and suffered minor injuries.

Police safely apprehended him while he was on the ground.

No one else was injured in the incident.

RCMP said the man faces a number of potential mischief and uttering threats offences.
