Direct flight to Edmonton a go

The Kamloops Airport continues to see increased traffic and a new direct flight between the city and Edmonton could increase it even more.

KAMLOOPS — Just a couple weeks after the city asked Air Canada to consider a direct flight between Edmonton and Kamloops WestJet has announced they will be launching that exact service early next year.

A daily non-stop direct flight via WestJet Encore will begin Feb. 15, 2015 and will arrive at Kamloops at 3:15 p.m. and leave the city at 3:45 p.m.

"We are delighted to grow our service in Kamloops," said Ferio Pugliese, President of WestJet Encore. "Daily service to Kamloops provides easy access to the many business and leisure opportunities thriving in this vibrant community, while also providing friendly, affordable air travel options to guests in the area and non-stop access to the broader WestJet network."

A meeting between Kamloops, Kelowna and Penticton airports and Air Canada Vice President Kevin Howlett in late March saw Coun. Ken Christian and other city delegates pitch the idea of a direct flight between the two cities. Air Canada communications later said the company routinely looks at opportunities, but would not confirm if the flight was an opportunity they were currently into.
