The family of a man who died in a collision on the Trans-Canada highway near Chase last week is appealing to the public for information and dashcam footage, while Chase RCMP is still trying to determine the cause.

Wayne Montgomery, 79, from Lee Creek, was the lone victim when his SUV collided with the trailer of a flat deck semi-truck east of Chase on Jade Mountain on Jan. 3.

“So far we haven’t had any contact from anyone that saw the accident happen,” said Montgomery’s daughter, Tanya Montgomery Giles. “We are hoping to hear from the person who was driving behind him.”

Sgt. Barry Kennedy of Chase RCMP said the investigation is ongoing and any information or footage from the public is encouraged.

“We still haven’t determined the cause of it yet,” Kennedy said. “We are waiting for medical stuff and a module control download for analyzing what actions were taken by the vehicles. We don’t have the answers yet but we hope to have them soon.”

Giles said her dad was on his way to Chase that day, was in good health and was a good driver.

“I want people to understand this is not about trying to point fingers or victimize the driver,” she said. “I know it is hard for the other driver and their family. It is simply about trying to find out what happened. Yes, my dad was an old man but he had a lot of good life left and was a responsible driver.”

Anyone with information regarding this accident can contact the Chase RCMP Detachment at 250-679-3221.
