VICTORIA - British Columbia has recorded 887 new cases of COVID-19 as the province nears 30,000 infections from the illness.
Health Minister Adrian Dix and provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry say in a joint statement Thursday that 13 more people have died, for a total of 384 fatalities.
The statement says 294 patients are in hospital, 64 of them in intensive care.
Dix and Henry are calling on the public to keep their contacts small as a way to support health-care teams working to track the virus.
A total of 10,307 people are being monitoring by public health-care providers as a result of identified exposure to known cases.
They say it's important to pay attention to where you go and who you see in case COVID-19 is transmitted to help contact tracers quickly prevent spread of the disease.
"Let's support our public health teams, which are tirelessly working to track the virus, break the chain of transmission and keep all of us safe. The best way to do that is for each of us to keep to as few faces as possible right now," the statement says.
The majority of the new cases, 612, were diagnosed in the Fraser Health region.
Five hospitals and dozens of long-term care and assisted-living facilities have outbreaks and Henry has said many of the latest deaths involve seniors.
