Cooler temperatures and smoke this week in Kamloops and the Okanagan

Kamloops could have smoky skies today, July 24, according to a special air quality statement issued by Environment Canada last night.

“Fire activity in the Central Interior, North East, and East Kootenay (South) continues to produce smoke and impact air quality,” the statement says. “Conditions may improve in parts of the northern half of the province today with cooler temperatures and showers in the forecast.”

The map accompanying the statement shows the South and North Thompson along with the Shuswap, including Kamloops and Salmon Arm, as being affected but not the Okanagan, although conditions can change by the hour and an update will be issued later today.

After reaching temperatures in the 35 Celsius range over the weekend, it will be relatively cooler this week with highs below 30 C in most locations.

The forecast for Kamloops is a mix of sun and cloud today with a high of 27 C. High temperatures range from 24 C to 29 C through the week before rising above 30 C next weekend.

There should be a mix of sun and clouds throughout the week with a 30% chance of showers tomorrow.

The Okanagan will be a bit warmer than Kamloops today with highs forecast at 30 C in Vernon, 29 C in Kelowna and Penticton.

Highs are expected to range from 23 C to 29 C through the week, hitting 30 C on Saturday.

There’s a chance of showers tonight, ranging from 60% in the north Okanagan down to 30% in the south. The rest of the week should have a mix of sun and cloud.
