Kamloops – The City of Kamloops has begun construction on a 1.8 kilometre multi-use pathway at new West Highlands Park in Aberdeen neighborhood. The 3.5 metre wide fully accessible pathway will provide recreational opportunities for all ages and abilities. The path will feature spectacular vistas of the North Thompson valley with scenic viewpoints and picnic areas and will be constructed with both hard surface (asphalt) and soft surface (shale) over its continuous length of 1.8 kilometres. Construction of the multi-use path is expected to be complete by October 2013 at a cost of $200,000.
“After a great deal of planning and public consultation, we are pleased to begin construction of this new park in Aberdeen,” says Jeff Putnam, City of Kamloops Parks & Civic Facilities Manager. “Constructing the multi-use pathway is just the beginning of what will be an amazing new year-round recreation area for Aberdeen residents and all of Kamloops. We look forward to seeing the completed project, which is expected in 2015.”
West Highlands Park is Kamloops newest park located at the former Aberdeen Hills Golf Course. Future development will include two multi-use grass sports fields, a renovated community hall and a horticultural garden. Plans are also underway to design a long board training facility.
