Photographers and sky watchers are in for a treat as a full supermoon is expected to brighten the sky early in the week.

The Sturgeon moon is one of two supermoons appearing in August, the second called a Blue supermoon will show up at the end of the month.

A supermoon happens when the moon’s orbit is closest to the earth at the same time it is full making it appear bigger and brighter than usual.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the moon is called a Sturgeon Moon, among other names, because the giant sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain were most readily caught during this part of summer.

The Sturgeon moon reaches maximum fullness at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday and will appear full and bright from Monday night to Wednesday evening and it looks like the weather will cooperate.

Overnight skies are predicted to be clear in Kamloops and throughout the Okanagan from Monday, July 31 to Wednesday Aug. 2 according to Environment Canada.
