PENTICTON - The City of Penticton is renting a former car dealership to provide maximum opportunity for public input into an important process, according to a spokesperson.

Community Engagement officer JoAnne Kleb says in an email the city is renting the former Penticton Auto Sales building at 249 Westminster Ave. for up to three months to make it easier for the public to get involved in the update to the Official Community Plan.

Kleb says the month-to-month rental is costing $1,900 per month.

She hopes the venue will attract more citizen interest in the city’s ExpOCP, the multi-day exposition being set up to provide a place where residents can freely share their views on the future of the city. The event runs from Jan. 18 to Jan. 20.

Noting the importance of the Official Community Plan, Kleb says the city is hoping the expo will help inspire fresh and different thinking about the future of the city.

The former auto sales building provides features and functionality to support the expo in addition to other activities planned, she says. It also provides a central location, has high visibility and lots of free parking.

“Given the number of activities planned over several days for the OCP, it is more cost effective to lease the space in January. We hope people will come to ExpOCP to see what it is all about,” Kleb says in the email, adding the city is arranging for more events in the coming months to continue the conversation with residents and make effective use of the temporary location.
