Cherry season has officially arrived
KELOWNA - The cherry season has started in the Okanagan with early varieties now making their way from Osoyoos.
But the northern cherries won’t be ready for another week or two.
“Everybody (in Osoyoos) has a few,” Kulbeep Brar, owner of Brar Fruit Stand and Orchards in Osoyoos, told iNFOnews.ca today, June 14.
She started selling her early ripening Santina variety last week.
But, for more northern growers, it will be close to the end of June before they start harvesting their fruit, said Sukhpaul Bal, president of the B.C. Cherry Growers Association.
“In the northern area, many are shifting a lot into later varieties,” he said. “we try to target the second part of July and most of August to get away from the Washington crop.”
Despite the Okanagan’s cold February and cool weather during the spring pollination time, the crop is only slightly below normal this year, Bal said.
