Cherry Creek evacuees allowed home after service station fire

KAMLOOPS - It was a scary morning for some residents in the Cherry Creek area, after a local service station caught fire.

Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Brandon Buliziuk says in a news release that Kamloops Rural officers attended to the fire at approximately 12:33 a.m. today, June 22, which was in the 4000 block of the Trans-Canada Highway.

When crews arrived, they determined the Cherry Creek Service Station was fully engulfed by the fire. Buliziuk says due to the close proximity and immediate potential risk to the neighbouring manufactured home park, RCMP conducted tactical evacuations of the residents. The highway was also closed in both directions through Cherry Creek.

The New Afton Fire Department attended and worked to contain and suppress the fire, Buliziuk says, while a large safety perimeter was established by RCMP officers.

When the fire began to be brough under control, utility companies attended to try and render the area safe.

At roughly 3:40 a.m., highway traffic was allowed through a single alternating lane, and evacuated residents were allowed back to their homes.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
