Dominican say New York couple died in apparent car accident

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - Police in the Dominican Republic say they believe a New York couple reported missing last month died as the result of an apparent auto accident.

Col. Frank Félix Durán Mejía said it had taken nearly two weeks to match the bodies to a missing-persons description sent by U.S. authorities.

Fifty-two-year-old Portia Denise Ravenelle and 40-year-old Orlando Moore arrived in the Dominican Republic on March 24.

Police said Tuesday that a severely injured Ravenelle was found without identification on March 27 at the scene where a car plunged into the sea from the highway leading to the airport. She died April 4 after six days in intensive care. What is believed to be Moore's body was found on the coast several miles away March 31.
