Car thief nabbed in Kelowna after day-long crime spree

SICAMOUS - A 47-year-old man wanted in Alberta has been arrested in Kelowna following a weekend crime spree which saw him steal a variety of vehicles which he would abandon before stealing another.

According to a Sicamous RCMP media release, 47-year-old Shane Schultz was finally arrested July 13 following the day-long crime spree.

At around 9 a.m. July 13, Sicamous RCMP responded to a report of a theft from an unlocked vehicle parked at a church in Sicamous. The suspect was seen leaving in a black Dodge truck with Alberta plates. Sicamous RCMP soon located the truck at a nearby gas station and attempted to stop the driver who fled at high speed eastbound on the Trans Canada Highway. Due to the dangerous manner in which he was driving, police did not follow him.

Later that morning at around 10:45 a.m. the owner of a campground in Malakwa told police a man had abandoned a black dodge truck with Alberta plates on his property. The campground owner had then seen the driver running towards the highway changing his clothes while he ran. Police traced the abandoned truck and found it had been stolen in Calgary in June.

Soon afterwards police had a call from a nearby homeowner whose Ford F350 truck had been stolen while idling, as he was loading it at the time. The truck was found abandoned on Ward road in Craigellachie and when police started checking nearby homes, a resident realized their Honda SUV, which had been parked with the keys in it, was gone.

At around 6 p.m. Kelowna RCMP saw a man who matched the description approaching the stolen Honda SUV at a parking lot on Bernard Avenue. Police arrested the man and found him in possession of the car keys, several pieces of stolen identification, a woman's purse and fraudulently purchased items.

Shane Schultz was charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, dangerous operation of a Motor Vehicle and several other charges. He was also wanted by the Calgary Police Service for being unlawfully at large at the time of his arrest. He remains in custody.
