PENTICTON - The first step in the Penticton’s engagement program for input into municipal cannabis laws has caught the public’s attention, according to city officials.

The “Weed like to hear from you” survey looking for input on the rules for retail cannabis sales and its public use in Penticton generated almost 800 responses in the first week alone.

City engagement strategist JoAnne Kleb says in a media release the survey heard from people from all walks of life, including many that had not engaged in city-based discussions before.

Early survey results indicate city residents see regulation and legalization of retail cannabis to be a good thing.

“There is more alignment on this topic than one might expect," Kleb says in the release. "We’re off to a good start but would like to hear from more citizens.”

Residents wishing to contribute to the discussion can go to the city's Shape your city website here.

The city will develop draft policies to be reviewed by the community and stakeholders prior to a recommendation to council later this year.
