Christmas candy lures suspected thief who wasn't supposed to touch vehicle

VICTORIA - The sight of Christmas candy seemed to be too much for a Victoria man who is suspected of breaking into a truck and stealing the goodies when he had already been warned not to touch any vehicles.

Const. Michael Russell says Michael Hetherington is also accused of helping himself to clothes and electronics in the truck.

He says Hetherington, who is in his 30s, was on probation and failed to comply with a court order banning him from touching any private motor vehicle without the presence of the registered owner.

Hetherington was also prohibited from parking lots and parkades in B.C.

He has been charged with breaching his probation order, theft and mischief.

Police are commending a sharp-eyed citizen for reporting the crime in progress.
