LOS ANGELES - The Latest on a damaging Southern California windstorm (all times local):

10 p.m.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power says crews are making progress in restoring electricity to thousands of customers who lost it during a Southern California windstorm.

The agency says more than 77,000 customers were affected by outages as winds gusted through Southern California Tuesday and overnight.

The DWP says there were additional outages as winds picked up again Wednesday afternoon. Even so, by Wednesday night only about 11,000 customers remained without power.

However, some customers may have to wait 12 hours or more to get their service back.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power says subsiding winds have improved working conditions for crew restoring power to thousands of customers.

The utility said Wednesday more than 20,000 customers have regained electrical service since the overnight windstorm, although it continues to receive new reports of downed lines or other wind-related outages.

The total number of customers who have lost power due to the weather event is now about 49,000.

The DWP says crews will work around the clock, but some customers may experience outages lasting up to 24 hours.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power says power has been restored to about half of the 42,000 customers who were blacked out by a windstorm that swept Southern California overnight.

The utility says as of late morning Wednesday crews have restored service to more than 20,000 customers.

The DWP says progress is being made but there's still much work to do.

Customers have been advised that some outages could last up to 24 hours.

The winds, which also toppled trees onto cars and buildings, have been decreasing.

Crews are repairing power lines and clearing toppled trees after a night of strong winds across Southern California.

The National Weather Service says wind speeds have dropped off early Wednesday along most of the coast and valleys but warning-level gusts will persist in many mountain locations.

In Palm Springs, authorities have called off an evacuation triggered Tuesday as winds spread a brush fire north of downtown.

The Desert Sun reports the blaze was contained at 40 acres.

Another round of winds is expected to develop Thursday night.
