Latest: Power restored to thousands in Los Angeles County

LOS ANGELES - The Latest on a power outage in Los Angeles County (all times local):

8:30 a.m.

Power has been restored to tens of thousands of customers following an outage across several communities in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County.

Southern California Edison spokesman Robert Villegas says nearly 90,000 customers were without electricity early Tuesday in Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Hawthorne, Gardena and Torrance. He says power was restored by about 7 a.m. The cause of the outage is under investigation.

A major refinery in Torrance began burning off its product in response to the outage shortly before 6 a.m. A huge flare could be seen for many miles.

Residents near the refinery are urged to close their windows and turn off fans because of smoke from the flare.

Refineries typically respond to outages by burning off product to relieve pressure and ensure gases are safely combusted.
